Our Lady of Victory Teacher Wins NCEA Distinguished Teacher Award

Mrs. Mary Ann Mecher, a fourth grade teacher at Our Lady of Victory School, was recently named as recipient of the 2013 Distinguished Teacher Award by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Mrs. Mecher was recognized for our outstanding commitment to the religious, academic, and social formation of her students. She will receive her award on April 2, 2013 during the NCEA’s annual convention in Houston.

49 STUDENTS NAMED NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALISTS

49 students in Catholic High Schools in the Archdiocese have been named semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship this year. Each year, the National Merit Scholarship recognizes academically talented seniors across the United States. In order to become a semifinalist, students must demonstrate superior academic achievement, a dedication to service, and a strong leadership abilities. Over 1.5 million students applied for the scholarship, and 16,000 were chosen as semifinalists.

FOUR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVE TOP STEM HONORS

Four Catholic schools were recenty recognized with top honors for their STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Bishop Leibold School, Carroll High School, and Lehman Catholic High School and McNicholas High School each were among the top recipients of the 2012 Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education, an award sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Science. The three schools were among the top 12 who received a maximum median score of 10 points in the award’s rankings. Congratulations to each of these schools for fostering such tremendous STEM programs!

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has received funding to continue and grow its Latino Initiative for Catholic Schools.

St. Peter Claver School Recognized as Catholic School

Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr has officially recognized St. Peter Claver Latin School for Boys as a Catholic school of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, effective July 1, 2012. Since last January, the school has participated in the recognition process, successfully demonstrating that it meets a series of Archdiocesan, state, and federal standards. St. Peter Claver was founded by Fr. Albert Lauer, an Archdiocesan priest, in 1999. Located in the annex of Old St. Mary’s Church in Over-the-Rhine (Cincinnati), St. Peter Claver serves a population of urban boys in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade.

St. Ignatius Teacher Wins National Award

Our Catholic Schools have received national recognition once again this year! Ms. Deborah Colina, a first grade teacher at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic School, has been named a 2012 Distinguished Educator by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Ms. Colina is recognized for her exceptional skills as an educator and her ability to infuse her instruction with Catholic teachings. Ms. Colina is one of 12 teacher recognized out of approximately 100,000 nominees for this award.

Our Lady of Victory Teacher Recognized as Outstanding Educator

The awards keep coming! Ms. Michelle Kahny, eighth grade language arts teacher at Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, has been named a 2012 Outstanding Educator for the Cincinnati area. The award is sponsored by the Cincinnatus Association, Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati, and NKU. Each year, three local educators are selected for this award based upon their outstanding talents as an educator. Congratulations!

Elder Campus Minister Wins National Award

Mr. Roger Auer, Director of Campus Ministry at Elder High School, was recently named a recipient of the Catholic Secondary Award from the National Catholic Educational Association. This prestigious award is given each year to high school educators who have made a significant contribution to Catholic secondary education. Mr. Auer is a graduate of Elder where he later returned as a science and religion teacher. After serving as religion department chair for over 20 years, Mr. Auer became the Director of Campus Ministry. Today, he coordinates the retreats and service programs of Elder.

ST ELIZABETH SETON AWARD

Kathy Sparks, principal of Resurrection School in Cincinnati received the St. Elizabeth Seton Award on January 8, 2012 from the Sisters of Charity. She was nominated for "ministering as Principal of Resurrection School, a Catholic inner city school in Cincinnati, lobbying successfully for busing, vouchers, and other financial assistance for students, insuring that students have daily nourishing food programs, which others had considered impossible to secure." We congratulate Kathy and her continued support of Catholic education for her students.

Visitation Principal Wins National Award

Mr. Terry Chapman, Principal of Our Lady of Visitation Catholic School, has been named the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Dr. Robert J. Kealy Distinguished Principal Award. This national award is presented annually to outstanding principals of Catholic elementary schools. The award is sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA).

LaSalle High School Campus Minister Receives National Award

Mr. Chris Winiarski, Director of Campus Ministry at LaSalle High School, was recently named the Distinguished LaSallian Educator for 2011 by the Christian Brothers of the Midwest. Mr. Winiarski was recognized for effectively engaging young men with the Catholic faith. Listed among his accomplishments was the establishment of the De La Salle Signum Fide Institute, a faith and leadership program at LaSalle. Legislative Alert:

All supporters of Catholic schools in Ohio are asked to contact their local representatives to support the PACT (Parental Choice and Taxpayer Savings) scholarship legislation, HB 136. Ohio House Bill 136 will create ways for parents’ tax dollars to follow the education of their children regardless of whether they have attended public or Catholic schools. St. Peter Teacher Named Hamilton Teacher of the Year

Ms. Becky Schafer, health and physical education teacher at St. Peter in Chains School, has been named Hamilton Teacher of the Year by the Hamilton Community Foundation. Ms. Schafer was recognized for her high quality of instruction and for encouraging children to live a healthy lifestyle. Ms. Schafer is the first non-public school teacher to be recognized with this prestigious award. The Initial Assessment Report for Catholic schools has been released on our website. This report effectively portrays the current state of Catholic school education in the Archdiocese. The data within the report was collected during the first phase of the vision formation process (the first nine months of 2011). UPCOMING: Vision for Catholic Schools Update Presentations:

For the past several months, an effort has been underway to establish a common vision for the future of Catholic school education in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. During the 2010-2011 school year, large amounts of data were collected on the current state of our Catholic schools. This data has been compiled in an initial Assessment Report that will be released to the public in early October. All are invited to attend a presentation in October regarding the vision. Catholic Schools Receive National Blue Ribbon Award

Congratulations to All Saints and St. Columban Catholic Schools for recently being named recipients of the Blue Ribbon Award. This award is given annually to schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high quality of academic achievement. Chaminade-Julienne High School and Carroll High School Receive STEMM Awards

Chaminade-Julienne High School and Carroll High School were recently recognized for outstanding STEMM programs by the Ohio Academy of Science. The schools were named a recipient of the Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEMM Education. This award recognizes schools that receive the maximum score of 10 points for having innovative and high quality programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (“STEMM”). Only five schools in the state received this award this year. Congratulations!

Identical Twins are Valedictorian and Salutatorian at Purcell Marian HS Graduation Ceremony

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES DEANERY — Purcell Marian High School’s commencement may cause some to do a double take.

For the first time in anyone’s memory, identical twins have the two highest grade point averages in the class. Ben Schultheis is the valedictorian, while Jake Schultheis is the salutatorian. The brothers attended Cardinal Pacelli School and are parishioners at Our Lord Christ the King Church in Mt. Lookout.

UNIFIED VISION SOUGHT FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

For the first time in its 189-year history, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is moving to create a unified vision and strategic plan for Catholic primary and secondary schools throughout the 19 counties of the Archdiocese.

“It is very important to begin building this vision and plan,” said Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr. “Our schools are a vital ministry of the Catholic Church.”

Congratulations to Our Lady of the Rosary School in Dayton

Congratulations to Our Lady of the Rosary School in Dayton for winning first place in the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Art, Writing, and Multimedia Contest! Students from OLR placed first in the seventh grade art division of this competition. The winning artwork was chosen from over 1,200 contest entries. The winning artists will attend an upcoming awards ceremony in Columbus. Congratulations on the outstanding work!

Piqua Catholic Wins National Challenge

Piqua Catholic School was recently named as the winner of the 2011 Pepsi Refresh Challenge. The Piqua Catholic community was successful in mobilizing their community to have the greatest number of online votes for this challenge. The Pepsi Refresh Challenge included numerous schools and non-profits organizations from across the country. As a result of their victory, Piqua Catholic will receive a grant of $50,000 to re-furbish their gym floor and purchase new athletic equipment. Congratulations to the Piqua Catholic community!

Teacher Receives National Honor

Congratulations to Ms. Jenny Teepen from St. Dominic Catholic School on being named a Teacher of the Year by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA)! Ms. Teepen, a sixth grade teacher at St. Dominic, was chosen as the Teacher of the Year for Region 6. She will receive her award at the NCEA convention in New Orleans later this spring. Ms. Teepen joins a large list of Archdiocesan teachers to receive this award. Congratulations!

St. Joseph School Named “Cincinnati Inclusive School of the Year”

St. Joseph Consolidated School was recently named a recipient of the 2011 Cincinnati Inclusive School of the Year Award. This honor is awarded each year by the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati. St. Joseph’s was recognized for its outstanding commitment to serving students with Down Syndrome and other special needs. Our congratulations to St. Joseph for its tremendous efforts to treat all students with respect, compassion, and love!

Buckeye Best Healthy School Silver Award

St. Ignatius was recognized with the Buckeye Best Healthy School Silver Award this year! The award is designed to recognize schools whose policies and practices reflect a high priority on healthy outcomes for children. It is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Health in partnership with the American Cancer Society. Look for the plaque displayed in the cafeteria. Thank you for sending healthy lunches for your children, and thank you Mrs. Bachman for continually working to provide healthy choices in the cafeteria.

SCHOOLS RECEIVE ACADEMIC HONORS

Our schools are thriving! St. Susanna School and St. Gabriel Consolidated School were recently named as Blue Ribbon Schools for the 2010-2011 school year. This prestigious honor recognizes schools with exceptional academic programs. St. Susanna and St. Gabriel join a growing list of Catholic schools that have been recognized with this award through the years. In addition, eleven elementary schools will be receiving Ohio Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities this year. Congratulations to all!

HIGH SCHOOLS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS

Three of our Catholic High Schools celebrated their fiftieth birthdays at a Mass on Sunday, September 12th, 2010. At the Mass, the heritage and excellence of LaSalle, McAuley, and Moeller High Schools were recognized and celebrated. The Mass, which took place at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, was attended by many past and present students, parents, teachers, and supporters. Happy birthday to these exceptional schools!

Archbishop Names School Superintendent

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati is getting a new Director of Educational Services and Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1.

He is Jim Rigg, Ph.D., Diocesan Director of Curriculum for the Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs and principal of Divine Redeemer School in Colorado Springs. The Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr, archbishop of Cincinnati, made the appointment upon the recommendation of a search committee following a nationwide search.  

House Poised to Regulate Private Schools

The U.S. House of Representatives could vote soon on legislation governing elements of a schools disciplinary policy and practice.

The bill (HR 4247) would affect all public schools and private schools whose students or teachers benefit from any federal education program (about 80 percent of Catholic schools, for example). The measure represents an unprecedented and unwarranted degree of federal regulation of religious and independent education.

Archdiocese of Cincinnati Buys Dayton Building

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has purchased a building for its Dayton administrative office, which will move into the new space around the end of March.

Archbishop Schnurr Assumes Leadership of Archdiocese of Cincinnati

The Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr, coadjutor archbishop of Cincinnati since Oct. 17, 2008, has succeeded the Most Rev. Daniel E. Pilarczyk as archbishop, becoming the 10th ordinary (presiding bishop) of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati since its founding in 1821.
