DePaul Cristo Rey High School
Andrew Farfsing
“I like the students and the staff members at this school. I like the warm feeling I get when I walk in the doors of the office. I feel that this is the right school for me.”
“I like that we get to work with other people instead of just books and paper. I also like the Tablet PC program.”
“I like the school values, the Corporate Work Study Program and that the school is new so that we can build it from the ground up.”
As the newest Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, DePaul Cristo Rey strives for academic excellence in the context of faith that is the rich tradition of Catholic education in our community. Yet DePaul Cristo Rey is unique in that it opens the doors of opportunity to young people for whom a Catholic high school education seems out of reach. Through its innovative Corporate Work Study Program, DePaul Cristo Rey is able to offer outstanding, affordable education in a safe, yet challenging environment. All students work five days a month in entry-level clerical positions at Greater Cincinnati companies. These work study positions enable students to gain real-world job experience, grow in self-confidence, realize the relevance of their education, and contribute to the cost of their education. Academic and work schedules are coordinated so no student misses class time.
While new, DePaul Cristo Rey already shares the rich histories of its sponsor, the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, and the nationwide Cristo Rey Network, of which it is a member. The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati have been innovators and courageous leaders in education for more than 200 years.
Aware of the success of the Cristo Rey education model, a group of Sisters, educators and community leaders undertook a feasibility study in 2007 that showed significant interest in and support for a Cristo Rey School in Cincinnati. The former Concordia Lutheran Church and School complex in Clifton was completely renovated in the fall of 2010 transforming it into a state-of-art campus for 21st century learning. DePaul Cristo Rey High School was formally dedicated on June 5, 2011, and welcomed its first freshmen that summer. The school will add a freshman class each year, growing into a full four-year program by 2014.
DePaul Cristo Rey is a full member of the Cristo Rey Network which now includes 24 schools in 22 cities, serving 6,500 urban students. Its proven model of educational success has led to a 100 percent college acceptance rate for its graduates.
DePaul Cristo Rey High School, sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, provides an opportunity for young women and men with economic need to obtain a Catholic, college-preparatory education, made affordable through an innovative Corporate Work Study Program. In a safe, nurturing environment the school strives to develop the full potential of each student spiritually, academically, physically and emotionally in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
