McAuley- The Balance of Brilliance

For the past forty-seven years, McAuley High School has educated over 10,000 young women. McAuley has always been sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy and likewise has consistently instilled in its students the Mercy values.

McAuley students experience academic excellence, as well as excellence in many other areas, including fine arts, service, and sports, in a brilliantly balanced environment which results in well-rounded women. McAuley has been recognized by the United States Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Academic achievements are celebrated and nurtured. Leadership skills are formed and strengthened at McAuley in various ways, from students involved in Leadership Council to a very active and creative Student Council. Over thirty clubs and twenty-five competitive sports teams offer opportunities for student involvement. The formation of the Catholic faith is at the core of daily activity at McAuley. Masses, retreats, daily prayer, prayer services and compassionate service to others are everyday occurrences.

Because of this wonderful balance, a McAuley graduate is: a woman of faith, a woman of excellence, a woman of respect for herself and others, a woman of compassionate service, and a woman empowered to influence the world.

In the Mercy spirit of hospitality, visitors are always welcomed at McAuley. Please call 681-1800 ext. 2272 for more information.

We will hold Open House on October 5, 2008 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. Our Entrance / Scholarship Test will be administered on November 22 starting at 8:00 am.

Overview:

McAuley High School, a comprehensive Catholic school for young women, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas is committed to quality education and growth within a caring, Christ-centered community. Faithful to the Gospel and the charism, core values and tradition of Mercy, McAuley’s essential activity is to create an environment designed to help each young woman develop her intellect, gifts and talents.

History:

"McAuley High School is part of a tradition which began in Ireland in 1831 with Catherine McAuley, the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine believed most ardently in the education of women; McAuley High School is carrying out her vision two centuries later. In 1958, Archbishop Karl J. Alter announced that the Sisters of Mercy had been chosen to establish a new high school in College Hill. Fifteen acres of land were donated by the Archbishop, but construction of the school was the responsibility of the Sisters of Mercy. Ground was broken on August 28, 1958, and the school was opened in 1960 with an enrollment of 200 freshmen. A class was added in each of the next three years. The original building remains beautiful and sound due to the Sisters’ foresight in using top quality materials. In 2002, seven new science labs, a fitness room, two music rooms, a conference room, and an expanded gymnasium and cafeteria were added to better accommodate students’ needs. Renovation of the original 1000-seat auditorium was completed in 2008."
