Overview:

Saint Albert the Great is an ever-evolving Catholic school offering a faculty focused on achievement and moral growth, with the added vigor of dedicated families and a supportive parish community. Saint Albert the Great is the kind of place where parents want to send their children, and a place where alumni are, indeed sending their children.

Fully committed to the academic strength of our students, we offer educational programs for kindergarten through eighth grade. The school has two classrooms per grade level with at teacher/pupil ratio of 19:1.

In religion students grow in their knowledge and practice of the Catholic doctrine and Gospel values. Each student participates daily in formal religious classes, attends weekly liturgies, and is a member of a Faith Family. Additionally, students are active in a variety of service projects to help them grow in social awareness.

The language arts curriculum is designed to develop a student's ability to communicate through writing, listening, as well as orally. Time is set aside for instruction in reading, writing, spelling, and grammar, as well as integrating these skills throughout the content subjects. As students develop their skills with decoding and reading fluency, they are exposed to a wide variety of literature. Instruction is supplemented by student participate in in the Accelerated Reader Program, allowing them to select books at their own reading level.

The math curriculum provides the teacher with identifiable and measurable objectives at each grade level and aligns classroom instruction with both state and national standards. Instruction is supplemented with the Accelerated Math Program. Students who have mastered all grade level objectives and display an above grade level ability with the math curriculum and on standardized tests may be chosen to participate in the Algebra program in the 7th and 8th grade years. This is a high school level class designed to move students in Algebra II or Geometry as a freshman in high school.

The primary objective of the science program is to help students develop an understanding of the various areas of science, while developing skills needed for scientific inquiry. To meet the archdiocesan standards students are engaged in hands-on activities that include; STEM, Science Fair, Learning Days, field trips and many other projects. As a result of these inquiry based activities, Saint Albert the Great School and 3 of our science teachers have been awarded the 2009 Governor's Award for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities.

An extensive number of curriculum-enhancing programs are present at Saint Albert the Great School including Spanish (6-8) that give s a student the opportunity to enter Spanish II as a freshman in high school. Additionally, students with special needs obtain caring support through the expertise of an intervention specialist, speech pathologist, guidance counselor, a school funded tutoring and RTI (Response to Intervention) program, and a school nurse.

A strong dedication to the arts is also prevalent as Saint Albert the Great presents many opportunities for the students to express their creative abilities. Muse Machine, offered as part of the curriculum, is a community fine arts program that has been a part of the music department for over 15 years. Additionally, the music department invites several local music programs to visit the school to reinforce the concepts being taught in class. The art department holds an annual Spring Art Show at the Town and Country Mall with over 250 pieces of work displayed.

History:

Catholic education for the children of the Parish has long been a priority for our pastors and parishioners. Planning for a school began shortly after the parish was formed in 1939 and long before the neighborhood shed its rural character. The sacrifices of those early parishioners to provide Catholic education have continued, with today's support for the school coming from all parishioners.

On August 12, 1949, just 10 years after the Parish's founding, Saint Albert the Great Church launched its own school fulfilling the dream of many. Classes began for 410 students, 8 Sisters of Charity, and 3 lay teachers in 17 classrooms. Sixty classes have graduated since then, and several generations of some Saint Albert families have received their education at our school.

The teaching staff in the early years was mostly members of the Sisters of Charity, who also made the top floor of the school their home until the parish completed the convent in 1954. These dedicated, selfless women served both as teachers, principals, and guided the school from its beginnings, through the burgeoning enrollments of over 1200 students (two sessions per day) in the fifties until an expansion was completed. The high enrollment numbers continued well into the eighties with a slow decline in students beginning in the late eighties.

The task of building a solid academic foundation based on Catholic values has been shared over the years by many committed and gifted lay teachers and principals. Currently, Saint Albert the Great boasts an outstanding team of 30 lay educators. Their work has been reinforced by the strong working relationship between parents and faculty fostered by the PTO.

The Saint Albert school campus has expanded to include a total of 27 classrooms as well as a gymnasium. Our buildings have been updated structurally and technologically through the years and now offer air-conditioned classrooms, Internet access, laptop computers, and interactive white boards to enhance instruction.
