Overview:

St. Mary School is a three-time recipient of the U.S. Department National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award. We work hard each and every day to be a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Classroom teachers at St. Mary are dedicated to the care and education of the whole child. The classroom teaching experience of our faculty averages 21 years — more than 44 percent of our teachers hold Master’s Degrees or post-graduate credits. All religion teachers are certified catechists with the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Each teacher works closely with the principal and specialists to develop the full potential of each child. Parents are the primary educators of their children and their involvement in our school is applauded and appreciated. We encourage parents to work within the classrooms, computer labs, library, cafeteria, and playground; to serve as resources, drive on field trips, attend conferences and give input into the school program. Parents and teachers are partners in education and, only by working together, can the best possible results be achieved for our children’s future.

History:

St. Mary Parish began simply in 1898 in a feed store on Griffith Avenue in Hyde Park. The lower floor was used as a chapel for Mass every Sunday, as well as for meetings and catechism lessons for 80 children. Although the house remains, today it is hard to recognize because of renovations. A photograph hangs in the school office of this early church and its members after its first Mass on Pentecost Sunday, May 29, 1898. The first St. Mary Grade School opened in 1908 with 100 pupils and shortly thereafter a high school curriculum was added. (There is also a picture of this first school in the school office.) The Sisters of Charity began teaching in our school from the beginning and these dedicated women served as principals until 1973.

Mission Statement:

To educate, inspire and energize children, with an emphasis on Catholic faith, academic excellence, and commitment to service.

Spotlight Teacher Name:
Mrs. Suzanne Doyle and Mrs. Jeanne Wilkens
Spotlight Teacher Subject:
Grade 1 Teachers
Spotlight Teacher Details:

Doyle WilkensMrs. Suzanne Doyle and Mrs. Jeanne Wilkens have been using a "team teaching" approach in grade 1 at St Mary School for the past 20 years. They share efforts in developing their challenging and results-oriented curriculum and leading one-of-a-kind events during the school year. An annual Grade 1 Christmas play and Mothers Day luncheon are events for the memory books. Suzanne and Jeanne have a postive, loving, and Christian approach to their students every single day.

Today they came back from a field trip to the Planetarium that the entire Grade 1 student body (60 students) attended. An official at the Planetarium commented in amazement that the two teachers were alone with their students without any parent chaperones...and how kind, well-mannered, and rule following the students were. Suzanne and Jeanne didn't think anything of it....St Mary School is blessed to have the two of the very best first grade teachers in the city!
